Piano and specialty pieces
Jamal Rivers has led our piano and specialty work for years — uprights, baby grands, safes from 600 to 1,400 pounds, slate-bed pool tables, and the occasional oversized armoire or gallery piece. More than anything, folks ring me about pianos coming off the Summerville hills — easing an upright down a run of steep brick steps is nothing like rolling one across a flat downtown loft.
A specialty piece doesn’t fit a straight hourly clock. Each one gets a flat figure instead — set by the piece itself, what floor it’s on, how steep the ground runs, and whether the street or driveway gives us a way in. Loads are insured to a $1,000,000 ceiling, begin at the 60-cents-per-pound released-value level, and stay claimable for nine months.
Sample specialty flat rates
| Item | Crew | Typical flat rate |
|---|---|---|
| Upright piano on level ground | 3 movers | $420 – $620 |
| Upright piano, Summerville hill carry | 3 movers | $620 – $900 |
| Baby grand, legs and lyre removed and crated | 3–4 movers | $950 – $1,450 |
| Gun safe 600–900 lbs, level ground | 3 movers | $500 – $780 |
| Slate pool table, broken down and re-leveled | 3–4 movers | $680 – $1,150 |
If a job runs long, the fallback is $200/hr for the three-mover specialty crew, but the flat rate is what you actually sign.
Why a sloped carry is its own job
On a baby grand leaving a Summerville home that sits on a grade, the legs and lyre come off up top — well before that first landing — and from there it’s a slow, tracked descent, one careful step at a time. On a walkout, a safe pushing 1,200 pounds goes down on laid plywood track. Where it’s the smart call, we give the specialty piece a day of its own. Or fold it into your residential or long-distance job.
What your Appling, GA flat rate already covers
- Uprights and grands get a piano board, four-wheel dolly and made-to-fit strapping
- On baby grands we remove the legs, lyre and pedals and build a custom crate
- A safe dolly rated beyond 1,500 lbs plus stair climbers take on steep, narrow hill approaches
- On request we break down slate-bed pool tables, then re-level and check the felt
- Wrapped and tarped carries protect pieces over brick steps and red-clay drives
- Full-value coverage is on offer, with a protection ceiling of $1,000,000
So what does it come to?
Two uniformed movers with the truck go for $150/hr on the clock, or seal the meter with a signed CSRA flat figure that lays the whole move out on one page
Blankets, dollies, shrink-wrap and the careful hand-carries a Grovetown ranch or a Summerville hillside staircase calls for are already baked into the rate, and so is any Certificate of Insurance a downtown Augusta high-rise or an Evans HOA wants on file. Want a third mover on the crew? That takes the hourly to $200/hr.
